NIN’s Personal Nutrition Advisor App
If you are keen to assess the nutrients of the food you are consuming daily, then you can take the help of ‘Nutrify India Now’. A first-of-its-kind India’s comprehensive mobile app, NIN’s Personal Nutrition Advisor App. Launched by the Hyderabad based Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN), ‘Nutrify India Now’, can be used as a personal nutrition-based app with India-specific data of nutritive value of all kinds of foods.
The unique feature of the app is that it can provide nutritional information about foods in 17 different Indian languages, making it useful pan-India. Interestingly, unlike other nutrition-based apps, ‘Nutrify India Now’ will give users access to specific Indian nutritive guidelines, authentic and well-researched India-specific databases, Indian foods and recipes and their nutritional information prescribed by the ICMR.
There are six components in this app – My Nutrient Requirements, Nutrients in my food, My Diet and Activity, Search Foods by Nutrients, Foods by language and Info. To make the app highly personalized, users can access their nutrient requirements by entering their Body Mass Index (BMI), Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and even Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) by inputting their age, gender, height, weight and even physical activity levels. The app is available for both Android and iOS.
Features of NIN’s Personal Nutrition Advisor App
The home page of this Nutrition App starts with:
- My Nutrient Requirements
- Nutrients In My Food
- My Diet and Activity
- Search Food by Nutrients
- Search Food by Language
1. My Nutrient Requirements:
The first component is quite clear, it redirects you to a typing section where you need to specify what nutrient or food exactly you need. Bodybuilders need more protein, people above 40 require more calcium etc., this option enables you to look for how much you need to consume as per the recommended daily allowance guidelines.
2. Nutrients in My Food:
This option asks for food you eat. It calculates the nutritional value of that food you have entered and gives an exact amount of nutrient intake. In our regular diet, we really don’t opt for Avocado or Boiled Chicken. Rather we eat our local delicacies or food like rice, dal, vegetable curry, etc. So this option will help us keep a track of the nutrients in the local foods you eat as well.
3. My Diet and Activity:
The App keeps track of the energy balance, between calories consumed and expended with the help of the data provided by us in the 1st and 2nd components.
4 & 5. Search Food by Nutrients and Language
The NIN’s app has this very attractive feature of searching the food based on the nutrient it possesses. For example, if you need to know about foods that are rich in protein, then select ‘Protein’ and source is opted as ‘Animal’ and language as English, then the results displayed will be as follows.
This certainly is one of the biggest outreach efforts for us and an interactive way to make people use the important data we have generated over the years. NIN App will act as the user’s personal nutrition advisor, literally keeping track of what the user is eating and also as a ready reckoner on nutrient information on raw food and recipes. NIN, which is a premier research institute on nutrition in the country, has launched it as part of its on-going centenary celebrations. Nutritional information on dietary intake of the user and two sub-users can be retained for seven days.
Nutritionists and nutritional counselors analyze a client’s eating habits and health concerns and then make recommendations based on the results whereas a Nutritional App can only figure out how much calories they are consuming while eating food and amount of calories burnt and help with the food choices. So it is recommended to consult a professional Nutritionist before making any diet plans and the track your nutrient data with a Nutrition Advisor App.
